    The Future of Renewable Energy

    Algae, otherwise known as “pond scum” is the preferred plant for making bio-fuels and other petrochemical replacements. Algae is among one of the fastest growing plants in the world, and about 50 percent of its weight is made up of oil. One of the best things about algae is that it can be found almost everywhere including oceans, ponds, swimming pools, and the common fishbowl. Growing algae can be used to extract the pollutants from coal-fired power plants because it thrives on a high concentration of carbon dioxide as well as nitrogen dioxide. Algae production facilities can thus be fed exhaust gases from fossil fuel power plants, and even breweries, to significantly increase productivity and clean up the air. Sounds like this “pond scum” could be the future in renewable energy. (more…)
